Illustration evoking a warm, plant-filled Thai restaurant dining room

Bangkok City Restaurant has been a family kitchen in Old East Dallas since 1993, when siblings Santhorn “Ood” Thavornkaew and Janpen took over. Ood came to North Texas to study English at UNT, and Janpen followed in 1992. Early on, they called their mother in Thailand for help with the recipes.

They kept the food true to the Thai flavors they knew. Ood still shops daily for herbs and spices at Asian grocers in Richardson and Garland. Both siblings live nearby and have chosen to keep Bangkok City a single neighborhood restaurant filled with familiar regulars.
